What is Futsal?

Futsal is a fast-paced, indoor soccer variant played with two teams of five players, one goalkeeper, and a smaller, harder ball. Futsal is played on a basketball-sized court with hard lines marking the boundaries, and without walls. The game emphasizes ball control, improvisation, creativity, and technique, and requires quick reflexes, fast thinking, and pinpoint passing.

Rules of Futsal:

  • Teams

Teams have four outfield players and one goalkeeper. The goalkeeper must wear a different color jersey than the other players. They may use their hands within the 3-point area of the basketball court.

  • Time

Matches are made up of two 20-minute halves with a 3-minute break at half-time. The clock stops when the ball is not in play or if the match is interrupted, but starts again when play resumes.

  • Substitutions

Substitutions are allowed at any time during the game, but must be made through the technical area in front of the team's bench.

  • Offsides

There is no offside in futsal.

  • Goal kicks

Goalkeepers restart play by distributing the ball with their hands. They can only handle the ball for four seconds in their own half, and have no time-handling restrictions in the opponent's half. They can't play by hand any ball played back to them, including head and chest.

  • Penalties

A penalty kick is awarded after a serious or intentional rule infraction takes place in the penalty area by the defensive team. (3-point area for basketball)

  • Fouls

Direct free kicks are awarded for infringements

  • Other rules

There are no throw-ins, and a kick-in/dribble in is used to restart play. The ball must stay below the goalkeeper's head height, or the opposing team is awarded possession and a free kick. Sliding feet first toward an opponent is illegal, and shoulder charging is not allowed.
